TP321H is a heat resistant, titanium stabilized, austenitic alloy that's commonly used for service in the 1000¡ã-1600¡ãF temperature range. TP321H stainless is primarily used in applications that involve continuous and intermittent service temperatures within the carbide precipitation range of 800¡ã-1500¡ãF. TP321 is similar to TP304 stainless but with a titanium addition of at least five times the carbon content. This titanium addition reduces or prevents carbide precipitation during welding and in the 800¡ã-1500¡ãF service conditions. In order to provide optimum resistance to intergranular corrosion and to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in service temperatures at 1500¡ã-1650¡ãF an air cool may be used.
Corrosion Resistance
TP321H has with some limitations (nitric acid) the same resistance as the unstabilised steel TP304.
¡ñ Organic acids at moderate temperatures
¡ñ Salt solutions, e.g. sulphates, sulphides and sulphites
¡ñ Caustic environments at moderate temperatures
The stabilisation with titanium gives TP321H improved resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Pitting and crevice corrosion may occur even in solutions of relatively low chloride content. However, the stabilisation with titanium results in a somewhat better resistance than that of TP 304.
Application
¡ñ Tubes in heating furnaces and
¡ñ Heat exchangers in sulphurisation and hydro-treating plants.
¡ñ In the petrochemical industry the steel is used in cracking furnaces for the production of ethylene and vinyl chloride.
